The rise of remote work has created a significant grey area for visa holders in the UK. The answer to "can I work remotely?" depends entirely on which visa you hold.
Skilled Worker Visa: remote work for your sponsor is fine β for anyone else is not
A Skilled Worker Visa ties you to a specific employer (your sponsor) and a specific role. You are allowed to work from home for that sponsor β many do, especially in tech and finance roles. However, you cannot work for a different employer, whether UK-based or foreign, without separate permission.
- βWorking from home for your sponsoring employer: β permitted
- βWorking remotely for a second UK employer: β not permitted without approval
- βWorking remotely for a foreign company that is not your sponsor: β this counts as working for an unauthorised employer
- βFreelancing or being self-employed: β not permitted on a Skilled Worker Visa
Graduate Visa: the most flexible route for remote workers
The Graduate Visa allows you to work for any employer, in any job, at any salary level, anywhere in the world β including working remotely for a foreign company while living in the UK. It is the closest the UK currently has to a digital nomad visa.
- βWork for any UK or overseas employer: β permitted
- βBe self-employed or freelance: β permitted
- βStart a business from the UK: β permitted
- βWork multiple jobs simultaneously: β permitted
Visitor Visa: you cannot work β even remotely
This is one of the most common misconceptions. If you are in the UK on a Standard Visitor Visa, you cannot work at all β including working remotely on a laptop for your home-country employer. The Home Office considers this "working in the UK" regardless of where the payment goes or where the company is based.
π‘ Tip
Even if you are paid into a foreign bank account by a company based abroad, working remotely on a Visitor Visa is not permitted. Doing so could result in visa refusal or curtailment, and affect future UK visa applications.
Spouse and Partner Visa: generally free to work
Most spouse and partner visa holders have the right to work in the UK without restriction, including working remotely for a foreign employer. Check your BRP card β it will typically say "no restriction on employment" or "work permitted." If it says otherwise, you should seek advice before taking on remote work.
Does the UK have a digital nomad visa?
As of 2026, the UK does not offer a dedicated digital nomad visa. Unlike Portugal, Spain, and several other countries, the UK has not announced plans to introduce one. The Graduate Visa is currently the most practical legal route for remote workers who want to live in the UK.
