How continuous residence works
5 years of continuous residence
Most routes (Skilled Worker, Health & Care, Spouse/Partner, Global Talent) require exactly 5 years of continuous UK residence before you can apply for ILR.
180 days per year rule
You cannot be outside the UK for more than 180 days in any rolling 12-month period during those 5 years. Exceeding this in any window can break your continuous residence.
Apply up to 28 days early
You can submit your ILR application up to 28 days before your 5-year anniversary — you don't have to wait until the exact date.
Processing time
Standard ILR processing takes up to 6 months. Priority service (£500 extra) gives a decision within 5 working days.
For guidance only
ILR rules vary by visa route and individual circumstances. Always verify your eligibility on GOV.UK or consult a registered immigration solicitor before applying.
