UK Visa Brake 2026: Which Nationalities Can No Longer Apply for Skilled Worker or Student Visas?

  • βœ“Afghanistan β€” no longer eligible to apply for a Skilled Worker Visa from abroad (entry clearance) from 26 March 2026
  • βœ“Afghanistan β€” no longer eligible to apply for a Student Visa from abroad from 26 March 2026
  • βœ“Cameroon β€” no longer eligible to apply for a Student Visa from abroad from 26 March 2026
  • βœ“Myanmar β€” no longer eligible to apply for a Student Visa from abroad from 26 March 2026

A new "visa brake" power introduced in March 2026 allows the UK government to restrict visa applications from specific nationalities β€” and four countries have already been affected.

What is the UK visa brake?

The visa brake is a mechanism introduced in the March 2026 Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules (HC 1691). It allows the Home Office to impose restrictions on entry clearance applications from specific nationalities on specific visa routes, without needing new primary legislation. The government says it will be used where there are high rates of visa abuse or immigration concerns.

Which nationalities are currently affected?

  • βœ“Afghanistan β€” no longer eligible to apply for a Skilled Worker Visa from abroad (entry clearance) from 26 March 2026
  • βœ“Afghanistan β€” no longer eligible to apply for a Student Visa from abroad from 26 March 2026
  • βœ“Cameroon β€” no longer eligible to apply for a Student Visa from abroad from 26 March 2026
  • βœ“Myanmar β€” no longer eligible to apply for a Student Visa from abroad from 26 March 2026
  • βœ“Sudan β€” no longer eligible to apply for a Student Visa from abroad from 26 March 2026

Does this affect people already in the UK?

No. The visa brake applies only to new entry clearance applications β€” that is, applying for a visa from outside the UK. Nationals of the affected countries who are already in the UK on a valid Skilled Worker or Student Visa are not directly affected. They may continue to live and work in the UK and, in most cases, can apply to extend or switch their visa from within the UK.

πŸ’‘ Tip

If you are a national of one of the affected countries and are currently in the UK, seek advice from a registered immigration solicitor before your visa expires. In-country switching options may still be available to you.

What alternatives exist for affected nationals?

While these specific routes are blocked for new applications from abroad, other routes may remain available depending on individual circumstances:

  • βœ“Family visas β€” if you have a UK spouse, civil partner, or qualifying family member
  • βœ“Global Talent Visa β€” not currently subject to the brake, for those who can demonstrate exceptional talent
  • βœ“Asylum or humanitarian protection β€” for those who qualify
  • βœ“In-country switching β€” if you are already lawfully in the UK on another valid visa

Can the visa brake be extended to other nationalities?

Yes. The visa brake mechanism is designed to be applied flexibly and can be extended to additional nationalities or visa routes at any time via secondary legislation, without a new Act of Parliament. No additional nationalities have been announced as of June 2026, but the mechanism remains in place for future use.
