The UK's no-sponsor visa for graduates from elite universities just got significantly bigger β the eligible university list doubled to 80 institutions in late 2025.
What is the HPI Visa?
The High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa is a 2-year (3-year for PhD holders) unsponsored UK work visa for recent graduates of the world's top universities. You do not need a job offer, an employer sponsor, or a minimum salary. You can work for any employer, be self-employed, or start a business.
Which universities qualify in 2026?
The eligible Global Universities List is drawn from universities appearing in the top 50 of any one of three major global rankings: QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, or the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking).
- βFrom 4 November 2025, the list doubled from 42 to 80 eligible institutions
- βNewly added universities include institutions from Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Canada, and Singapore
- βThe expanded list applies retroactively to the past 5 academic years β newly eligible graduates may now qualify
- βImportant: no UK universities appear on the list β Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and UCL are excluded by design
- βAlways check the list for your specific graduation academic year on GOV.UK
π‘ Tip
The list is retroactive for the past 5 academic years. If your university was recently added, you may qualify even if it was not on the list when you graduated.
Eligibility requirements for 2026
- β50 points: degree from an eligible university, awarded within the past 5 years
- β10 points: B2 English language proficiency (from 8 January 2026; B1 was accepted before this date)
- β10 points: maintenance funds β Β£1,270 held continuously for 28 days, ending within 31 days of application
- βTotal needed: 70 points
Annual cap: act early
From 1 November 2025, there is an annual cap of 8,000 HPI applications per year (running November to October). If the cap is reached, new applications may be paused until the next annual period. This is a significant change β if you are eligible, apply as early in the year as possible.
What can you do on an HPI Visa?
- βWork for any employer in any role β no sponsorship required
- βBe self-employed or freelance
- βStart a business
- βChange jobs freely without notifying the Home Office
- βBring your partner and children as dependants
Can you extend the HPI Visa?
No. The HPI Visa cannot be extended. When it expires (after 2 or 3 years), you must switch to another route β such as the Skilled Worker Visa, Global Talent Visa, or a family route β or leave the UK. Most HPI holders use their time in the UK to secure a Skilled Worker sponsor before their visa ends.
