Frequently asked questions

What visa do I need to move to the UK?

The right visa depends on your situation. If you have a job offer from a licensed UK employer, apply for a Skilled Worker visa. For family joining a UK resident, apply for a Family visa. Students need a Student visa. Use our free Visa Finder tool to get a personalised recommendation based on your circumstances.

How long does it take to move to the UK?

Once you have a visa, you can move as soon as it's approved. Skilled Worker visa processing takes 3–8 weeks. Family visas take 8–12 weeks. Student visas take 3 weeks. We recommend applying at least 3 months before your intended move date to allow buffer time.

Can I move to the UK without a job offer?

Not on the most common routes. The Skilled Worker visa requires a job offer from a licensed sponsor. However, there are routes without a job requirement — Global Talent (for exceptional talent), Youth Mobility Scheme (for 18–30 year olds from eligible countries), and Graduate visa (if you have a UK degree).

How much money do I need to move to the UK?

You typically need £1,270 in savings (held for 28+ days) to meet the financial requirement for most visas. Budget separately for: visa fees (£719–£1,420), NHS surcharge (£1,035/year), first month's rent plus deposit (£2,000–£4,000 in London, less outside), and living costs.

Can my family come with me to the UK?

Yes — your spouse/civil partner and children under 18 can apply as dependants on most UK visa routes including Skilled Worker. They can work and study in the UK without additional restrictions. Each dependant pays their own visa fee and NHS surcharge.

Do I need to speak English to move to the UK?

For most work and study visas, yes. The Skilled Worker visa requires B1 level English (equivalent to IELTS 4.0 overall). You can demonstrate this via an approved test (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic) or a degree taught in English. Family visas also have English requirements.
