One of the most practical questions new arrivals ask is: "Can I use my driving licence in the UK?" The answer depends on where your licence is from and how long you've been in the UK.
How long can you drive on a foreign licence?
If you are visiting or have just arrived, you can drive in the UK on your foreign licence for up to 12 months. After that, you must either exchange your licence or pass the UK driving test.
Countries that can exchange their licence directly (no test)
The UK has "designated country" agreements with certain countries — meaning you can exchange your licence for a UK one without taking a test. These include:
- ✓All EU/EEA countries (exchangeable for 5 years after becoming UK resident)
- ✓Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, Singapore
- ✓Most Gulf states: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait

How to exchange your foreign licence with DVLA
- ✓Complete form D1 (available at Post Offices or DVLA website)
- ✓Submit your foreign licence (original — DVLA keeps it)
- ✓Provide a UK address and proof of identity
- ✓Pay the £43 fee
- ✓Receive your UK photocard licence by post (usually 2–6 weeks)
If your country is NOT on the exchange list
If your licence is from a country without a reciprocal agreement (e.g. India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Philippines, most of South Asia and Africa), you must pass the UK driving test — both theory and practical. You can, however, drive on your foreign licence while learning and while waiting for your test.

Do I need a UK licence to insure a car?
Most UK insurers will insure you on a foreign licence for up to 1 year. After that, many will require a UK licence or will significantly increase your premium. This is a key reason to exchange or sit the test promptly.
