Opening a UK bank account is one of the first things you need to do when you arrive β you need it for rent, salary, and everyday spending. But traditional banks often reject new arrivals with no UK credit history. Here's what actually works in 2026.
The fastest option: digital banks (open in minutes)
Digital banks like Monzo, Starling, and Revolut are designed to onboard new arrivals quickly. You need only a valid passport and a UK address (even temporary, like a hotel or employer address). Many people open their Monzo account before they even land using their home country address.
- βMonzo: Most popular with immigrants. Free account, instant setup, full UK sort code and account number
- βStarling: Excellent app, free account, accepts most visa types on day one
- βRevolut: Good for international transfers and holding multiple currencies
- βWise: Best for sending money abroad cheaply β also has a UK account number
π‘ Tip
Open Monzo or Starling before your first salary payment arrives. Your employer needs a UK sort code and account number β Monzo provides these immediately.
Traditional banks: what they require
High street banks (Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest) typically require: a UK address, photo ID, and often 3β6 months of UK address history or a credit check. This makes them difficult for new arrivals.
HSBC and Barclays do offer "international" accounts β HSBC Expat and Barclays International β aimed at people relocating. These can sometimes be opened from abroad before you arrive if you already bank with them in your home country.
What documents do you need?
- βValid passport (with UK visa if applicable)
- βUK address β even a temporary one (Airbnb, employer accommodation, or a friend's address)
- βFor some banks: biometric residence permit (BRP) or eVisa confirmation
Credit building: starting from zero
UK credit scores start from scratch for everyone who arrives from abroad β your home country history doesn't transfer. Start building UK credit immediately by: getting a SIM-only phone contract (pay monthly), applying for a credit-builder card (Capital One, Aqua), and registering on the electoral roll at your address.
