Registering with a GP (General Practitioner) is one of the most important things to do when you arrive in the UK. It's free, open to everyone β including immigrants on visas β and gives you access to the full NHS. Here's exactly how to do it.
Who can register with a GP in the UK?
Anyone who is ordinarily resident in the UK can register with an NHS GP β including visa holders, asylum seekers, and undocumented migrants in some cases. You do not need to have paid the NHS surcharge, and GPs cannot refuse registration based on your immigration status.
π‘ Tip
Register with a GP within your first week. You may need a sick note, prescription, or appointment at short notice β and walk-in access without registration is much harder.
How to find a GP near you
- βGo to nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-gp and enter your postcode
- βLook for GP surgeries that are "accepting new patients" β this is shown in the search results
- βCall the surgery to confirm and ask what registration documents they need
- βSome surgeries allow online registration via their website
What documents to bring
- βProof of identity: passport and visa/BRP or eVisa
- βProof of address: a letter, bank statement, or tenancy agreement with your UK address
- βSome GPs ask for previous medical records β these are optional at registration
- βYou do NOT need an NHS number to register (you get one automatically when you register)
What if a GP refuses to register you?
GPs can only refuse registration if their patient list is genuinely full, or if you live outside their catchment area. They cannot refuse based on nationality, immigration status, or lack of documentation. If you are refused unfairly, contact NHS England (0300 311 22 33) or your local Integrated Care Board.
Getting an appointment once registered
Booking a GP appointment can be slow β some surgeries have 2β4 week waits for routine appointments. For urgent issues, call 111 (NHS helpline). For emergencies, go to A&E or call 999.
