Council Tax & Benefits

3 sections

1

Council Tax

If you rent your own home or flat, you will need to pay Council Tax to your local council. Contact your local council when you move in. Students are usually exempt — apply for a certificate from your university.

2

Benefits eligibility

Your eligibility for benefits depends on your visa type and immigration status. Some visas have a "No Recourse to Public Funds" (NRPF) condition — check your visa carefully. See gov.uk/benefits-calculators

3

Universal Credit

If you are eligible, Universal Credit is the main working-age benefit covering housing, living costs, and childcare. Apply at gov.uk/universal-credit. Get help from Citizens Advice if you're unsure.
