Opening a Bank Account

Basic bank accounts

If you struggle to open a standard account, all major banks must offer a basic bank account. You only need ID and proof of address. Try Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, or NatWest.

Digital-first banks

Monzo, Starling, and Revolut are easier to open — no UK credit history needed, just a passport and selfie. They work as full UK bank accounts and are FCA regulated.

Building credit history

Register on the electoral roll, pay bills on time, and consider a credit-builder card (e.g. Capital One Platinum). Good credit history helps with renting and future loans.
