Registering with the NHS

4 sections

1

Find a GP

Go to nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-gp and search by postcode. Most GP practices accept patients. You do not need a permanent address to register — you can use a friend's address or a local shelter.

2

What to bring

Bring your ID (passport or BRP), and any medical records if you have them. You don't need proof of address, but it helps. Registration is free — you should never be charged.

3

Entitlement to NHS care

Most migrants are entitled to free NHS treatment. If you have a visa of 6+ months, you've already paid the Immigration Health Surcharge. Emergency treatment is always free for everyone.

4

Dental & Eye care

Find an NHS dentist at nhs.uk/find-a-dentist. If you have a low income or certain visa types, you may get free NHS prescriptions, dental, and eye tests — check nhsbsa.nhs.uk/helppayingnhscosts
