Your Rights as a Tenant

4 sections

1

Landlord access

Your landlord must give at least 24 hours written notice before entering your home (except in emergencies). You have the right to quiet enjoyment — your home is your private space.

2

Repairs

Your landlord is responsible for structural repairs, heating, hot water, and gas/electrical safety. Report issues in writing (email/text) to create a record. Contact the council if the landlord ignores serious problems.

3

Eviction

Your landlord cannot evict you without a court order. If you have an assured shorthold tenancy, they must give proper notice (Section 21 or Section 8). Illegal eviction (changing locks, removing belongings) is a criminal offence — call 999.
